Dibakar Kundu :
India is a vast country with thousands of years of rich culture and heritage. Hundreds of communities, if not thousands have lived and thrived in this country and each one of them have contributed to the richness of our country’s heritage. One such community is Vishwakarma community.
Widely and commonly known as masters of shilpkala, this community, the Bhartiya Sanatan Vaidik Shilp Vishwakarma Brahman community, has contributed greatly to the shilp and vastu shastra tradition of india. In the shilpkala there are various divisions like maling of stone statues and temple stone idols, making of bronze statues and idols, wood carving, etc. Each work is a work of precision and requires good imagination, creativity and attention to minute details. The idols sculpted by this community stand even today high and tall highlighting the creativity and dedication of the sculptors.
The Surya temple of Konark, Temple of Jagannathpuri where world famous rath yatra is conducted every year,Lingraja temple of Bhuvaneshwar, the world famous Ajanta and Ellora cave temples in Maharastra ,The Kailasa temple in Ellora. The mind boggling facts about this kailasa temple is that it is not a built temple but a temple carved out of a huge rock from top to bottom. Till today this temple remains a challenge for modern builders / architects and scientist. In konark temple a 52 tonne single stone is found placed on the top most portion of the temple. It remains a mystery as to how a rock of such magnitude was carried up and placed on top. One has to visit the famous Mahaballipurm – a place 40 KMs from Chennai to believe what all is possible in sculpting. Numerous sculptures, stone carvings and temples are found in this sea shore place which makes one wonder whether these were done by human beings or by Gods themselves. Hoysala a place of great and world famous temple architecture in Beluru and Halabidu are known for their breath taking sculptures. Sculptures in Cave Temples and other temples in Chalukya Style in Badami, Aihole, Pattadakaluu. Apart from these there are numerous temples and cave in Karnataka and other South India cities of which stand testimony to the great work of the VISHWAKARMA COMMUNITY.
By their handicraft the vishwakarma shilpis have given the world a form from the millions of believers to worship. They have given shape to the emotion and bhakti of these people. Not omly that the places mentioned above are all international tourist destinations and tourists from all over the world throng these places of worship and art thus enabling the country to millions of dollars in foreign exchange . Thus this community has contributed to the social , cultural ,spiritual and economic well-being of the country.
Such feat were possible thousands of years ago as the community received continuous support from the then rulers and they received engorgement from all quarters. But now this community stands as the most – neglected, most unrecognized community which has been pushed back economically, socially and politically. When their native shilpa creativity’s future looks bleak, the members of this community are taking up other forms of employment and business. This has seen and it would be like losing one of the limbs of the body.
In an effort to reclaim the glory of the vishwakarma community, a samavesh named “ Akhil Bharat Vishwakarma Sadhu-Sant Samavesh’ was orgnised by Swami Shivatmananda Sarswati, Banaluru. The samavesh was conducted on the 5th,6th and 7th of May 2017 at the ashram of Sri Sri Ravishanakar Guru ji, Kanakpur Road, Bangaluru.
